An Island in West Bengal? I am talking about a small Island of the Sundarban Delta which is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal on 3 sides and a river on one side. Located in Namkhana, Mousini Island is among one of the offbeat places to visit near Kolkata as it is not much explored by tourists so you can expect less crowd throughout the year.
In this blog post, we will talk about how to reach Mousuni Island, where to stay, what to expect and the total cost of a 2 days trip.
A fun fact, This Island was first developed by the British to trade salt and dry fish.
This virgin beach is great for a short weekend trip if you love bird watching, photography, clean beaches, and living in nature with peace, far away from the chaos of cities.
I also have a video on my YouTube channel on the Mousuni Island trip where I documented the whole journey. If you prefer watching a video then you can go ahead with it.
Mousuni Island is 120 Km from Kolkata which takes approx 3 to 4 hours to reach. We went by car taking the Baruipur Amtala Road. After crossing the Namkhana Bridge we reached Patibunia Ghat after 30 minutes. Then we took a boat to cross the river which cost Rs. 10/- per head and then a toto to reach our pre-booked campsite which cost Rs. 25/- per head.
You can also choose a train or bus route.
Take a train from Sealdah station to Namkhana and then a toto or van to Hatania Datania River. After crossing the River take another Toto either to Hujuter Kheya Ghat (14.4 Km) or Patibunia Ferry Ghat (16 Km) from there take another toto to your pre-booked campsite.
Take a Volvo bus from Esplanade, two buses run every day from Esplanade to Namkhana. After reaching, book a Toto till Bagdanga kheya ghat, which will take approximately 45 minutes. Cross the river and take a toto or e-rickshaw to your pre-booked campsite.
October to mid-April, avoid visiting during the monsoon season.
This Island has 2 types of accommodation, mud houses or cottages and tents. We booked a mud house for our stay. The total trip cost is mentioned at the end of the blog post. There are no luxury hotels on this island so expect basic amenities and enjoy living in the lap of nature. Do book your accommodation in advance as you might not get on-the-spot bookings.
If you are a nature lover then you can spend time walking on the long stretch of virgin beach, birdwatching, or taking amazing photos as the view is beautiful with greenery, sand, and sea. Enjoy the sunset or have fresh fish. We spent a lot of time sitting on the balcony of the mud house as it was raining most of the time when we were there and when the rain stopped, we went to the beach and kept strolling along the shore.
After 30 minutes of toto ride from Patibunia Ghat we reached Dolphin Camp Site wherein we booked a mud house. There are 3 mud houses, 1 bamboo house and the rest are tents in this campsite.
The mud house on the right named Kush written in Bengali is where we will be staying.
This is the balcony and the walls are completely hand-painted. The room also has hand-painted walls giving it that ethnic look.
It kept raining the whole day and we could not go down to the beach. We spent our time in the mud house enjoying the view and it felt as if we went back in time! With the ethnically painted mud houses, the rain, and the splashing sound of the ocean waves, it felt so lively!
In the evening, the mud houses looked even more beautiful with the yellow lights.
It still kept raining at night so we just stayed inside, had dinner, and called it a night.
The next morning, we woke up to heavy rain and stormy wind! We planned this trip in August which is in the monsoon so we had to face this kind of weather but I just wanted to take a break and travel somewhere for the weekend. So, don’t plan a trip to a beach destination during the monsoon season.
In the afternoon, the rain finally stopped so we decided to head to the beach but it became so sticky and slippery with mud! The storm destroyed most of the adjoining areas along with the stairs that were built from our campsite to go down to the beach.
They tried to make a quick fix but it did not work so we took off our shoes and dug our feet into the mud and walked all the way to the beach. It was quite risky as the mud was very slippery but we helped each other out and finally, we could reach the beach!
Travel by train – Sealdah Station to Namkhana Station
Train ticket cost – Rs. 50/- (Round Trip)
Travel by bus – Kolkata to Namkhana
Bus ticket cost – Rs. 90/- to 100/-
In the case of train and bus routes, you have to cross 2 rivers and the travel cost by toto or van for in-between journeys is very cheap, around Rs. 25/- to 30/-.
Travel by car or bike – a distance of 120 Km. Which takes 3 to 4 hours to reach.
The boat ride from Patibunia Ghat to cross the river costs – Rs. 10/-
Toto to reach our pre-booked campsite costs Rs. 25/-
Mud house – Rs. 1600/-
Bamboo house – Rs. 1500/-
Tent – Rs. 1200/-
(Package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
There are barbeque facilities for which you have to pay extra.
It’s quite reasonable to plan a 2 days trip to Mousuni Island. You get see a beautiful clean beach, great location for photography, experience living in a mud house or a tent and enjoy nature view with the sound of the ocean waves.
