I went on a road trip with a group of friends to Sundarbans on October 8th this year. We started our journey from Kolkata which is a ride of about 100 Kms. We reached at 8:15 p.m. and got to see the beautiful night view while on a boat ride towards our stay for 2 nights and 2 days. After a boat ride of 2 Hours, we reached Sajnekhali Eco Tourism Complex where we stayed for the whole trip.

About Sundarbans
The Sundarbans is the World’s Largest Mangrove Forest formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. The forest covers an area of about 10,000 Km. Sq. of which forests in Bangladesh’s Khulna Division is about 6017 Km. Sq. and in West Bengal it’s about 4260 Km. Sq. The species of the tree that is most abundant in this forest is called Sundri.
Our Stay: Sajnekhali Eco Tourism Complex
The property was made of wood and I fell in love with the corridor! It looked endless and was painted green which blended nicely with the greenery around and at night with the lights on, it looked even more beautiful. We woke up every morning with a view of monkeys running around!
The food was great with a variety of Indian cuisines. The restaurant area was nice with all wooden furnishings and was clean and tidy.
Day – 1
1. The Daytime Boat Ride
I woke up at 5.30 am. the next day with a view of a lot of monkeys from the corridor! It was such a fun experience as the whole ground in front of the building was filled with monkeys running around and playing. Then we had our breakfast at 6.30 a.m. and left for the boat ride at 7 a.m.
The boat ride was so serene, we could see only trees and water. The boat ride is the essence of Sundarbans. The weather was quite sunny that day so we had a hard time managing the heat! The whole day we were on board sailing through the river into the wide waterscape and also the narrow lanes to get a better view at the flora and fauna of the forest.
2. Dobanki Watch Tower and Dobanki Canopy Walk
The Dobanki Watch Tower is one of the main tourist attraction in Sundarbans. We saw some deers and birds from this tower and the view from the top was filled with greens. We also went along the Dobanki Canopy Walk which is about half a km long. Do keep your sunglasses on because the walk is not a shaded area and I also used a scarf to wrap my face as well because I get tanned very easily.
3. Boat Ride Continues
We kept our eyes open so that we could spot a tiger. But we couldn’t spot one, instead we spotted a lot of other animals like deers, birds and a big crocodile. The crocodile that we saw was sunbathing on the shore of the river so we could have a good look at it. But as our boat came closer, it went into the water.
Till evening we were on board and watched the beautiful sunset and then returned back to the property.
Day – 2
I woke up at 8 a.m. and saw 2 big monitor lizards from the balcony which was quite fun to watch! We left the property at 9 a.m. with our luggage for the boat. Then we took the 2 Hours boat ride to reach Godkhali Ferry Ghat from where we got into a winger to finally reach Kolkata in the evening.
This Sundarban trip was quite a refreshing experience and this was also our first time visit there. One of my favourite part was when we were returning from the Dobanki Camp, while we were on board, we reached a place where we could see nothing else but water around us, this place was far away from land and it looked like we were in the middle of nowhere! We halted over there for a moment to just take in the view and then we resumed our journey. So, that was one of my favourite part. Which one was your favourite part from Sundarbans?
