We get so overwhelmed with work that we forget to take care of the person that needs the most attention that is our own self. That’s why Self-care is important to keep ourselves healthy mentally and physically. We should be the first person who is responsible for our well-being and taking charge of our emotions and feelings.
There are many reasons as to why self-care is important and why you should implement a few self-care habits for a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the reasons that are remarkable:
1. Feel Better To Work Better
Your feelings play an important role on how you perform throughout the day, whether be it some office work or cooking your favourite dish or going to get groceries.
If you feel low, depressed, anxious or irritated then you won’t be able to perform in a productive way and hence procrastinate. That is why self-care is important to help in making you feel better throughout the day so that you can perform at your optimum level.
2. Taking Care Of Your Mental Health
Mental health is crucial when it comes to taking care of yourself. If you are not mentally present at the moment then you are not likely to give your 100% to anything that you are doing.
If there are issues that you are dealing with which needs to be taken care of then do so and look for solutions that you can implement slowly into your lifestyle. With calm mind you will be able to achieve a lot more and strike off things from your to-do list!
3. Heal Physical Conditions
You will notice that when we are in a balanced lifestyle where we maintain a proper routine, eat healthy and take care of our mental health, we are able to heal any physical condition that we might have in a much faster way. If we take care of ourselves then our overall health also gets better thus making self-care important in our daily lives.
4. Know Yourself Better
If we don’t give time to ourselves then it’s really hard to know us in a better way. When you spend time with yourself without any distractions, be it your phone or laptop or any other person, you are able to know what type of a person you really are and what you really want in your life. You get positive ideas on how to live your life in a better way and how you like things to be.
Now, let’s talk about the 6 Self-Care Habits that you can implement for a healthy lifestyle:
1. Start Writing A Journal
Writing what’s going on in your mind is one of the best ways to get things into a clear perspective. You can do it in the morning or at night before going to bed, you can do it daily or weekly, whatever you feel like. Just write down your feelings, positive things which happened that day, things that you want to achieve or things that you are working towards and how you would like that to be.
This really has an effect of releasing a burden off your shoulders and you are definitely going to feel much better than before. Writing a journal is one of my personal favourite self-care habit that I have been following for about 14 years.
2. Watch Motivating or Relaxing Movies/Series
Movies or series that we watch influence our lives quite a lot, so might as well watch things that makes you feel alive. Watching inspiring visuals always have a positive effect on our mind and we tend to feel relaxed and happy after watching a great movie or a series of our taste.
Choose the ones that you can learn from and that add value to your life. Whenever I feel low or demotivated, I watch the series Friends! It cheers me up every time.
3. Skincare And Pampering Sessions
I find skincare and pampering sessions to be very relaxing and therapeutic. I look forward to these sessions and enjoy spending time with myself while doing so.
I have a decent skincare routine that I follow and also once in a while indulge into full body pampering session at home which really calms my mind and makes me feel positive about myself. These self-care habits you can follow daily to have a few minutes to yourself every day.
4. Exercise Frequently
Even if you don’t have the time to exercise daily, you can do it 3 or 4 times a week. Exercising really helps in relaxing your mind and body. You don’t have to do heavy duty exercises on a daily basis, light stretching exercises can do the job when you are running out of time. You can do a mix of yoga and cardio or ab exercises which strengthens your core muscles.
5. Meditation
I know this sounds cliched but it really works. Sit down, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Focus on the thoughts that come to your mind. Meditation might not always be thinking about nothing.
I take meditation as processing my thoughts and feelings. This really helps in arriving at solutions if I am stuck somewhere in life, helps in sorting my feelings about different situations and calms my mind. This is probably the most heard self-care habit and it’s results justifies why this is so popular.
6. Reading Books
Reading helps to strengthen your brain and improve memory. I try to read on a daily basis, even just a few pages. Read books on topics that you love and build your reading habit over a period of time. I read a variety of books including both fiction and non-fiction.
Starting with a few pages everyday will help you grow your reading capabilities overtime. You can learn a lot through reading books and gain a better perspective towards life.
Giving self-care importance might be the thing that you need the most at this very moment when we are surrounded by so much negativity and uncertain events.
